Ada and Mack lay on a towel on the beach, side by side, looking up at the sky. It was early evening, and the air had cooled. Her underwear was wet from when he had touched her on the jetty, and she wanted more.

“So, what are we doing?” Mack said.

“Having a drink?” Ada said.

“I mean, are you into this, or me, or?” Mack asked. It was interesting how someone so confident could suddenly seem insecure and need affirmation.

“Obviously, or I wouldn’t be here,” said Ada. “I mean, I don’t know. What do you think is going on?”

“I think I love being with you,” Mack said, grabbing her thigh and rubbing it. A seagull flew overhead and dipped down close to them, searching for food.

“I love being with you too,” Ada laughed. She put her hands over her mouth, holding the edges of her sweater in the finger loops. He made her feel like she was in high school, young and foolish. “I don’t know! I mean, I like you! But I shouldn’t!”

“It’s okay. I didn’t mean to put you on the spot,” Mack said. He leaned in to kiss her. He smelled of pine and aftershave. She wanted to devour him.

“No, I know this must be confusing for you,” she said. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” he said. He turned on his side, gazed at her, and pushed a strand of her long black hair over her shoulder, gently. “I just like being with you. I’m enjoying you. Us.”

“Are we an us?” Ada asked, turning toward him, her head on her arm in the sand.

“Maybe,” Mack said. “If you want us to be an us.”

Of course, she wanted to be an us! Ada wanted to yell “yes” and dance around in the sand! But she was married. And what if Ben found out? Would everyone think she was a terrible mother and wife? Would she have to move? Would Sadie be pissed? She knew Sadie had some residual feelings for him and that they’d made out that night after the Lawsons’ party. But Mack assured Ada it was just a drunken kiss for old times’ sake.

“I do want that,” she said. Ada dipped her fingers into the back of his jeans, feeling where his back ended and his ass began.

The sun began to set. The sky burst with shades of yellow, orange, and pink, like a gallon of sherbet ice cream. The white sand was cold in between her toes. Lady’s slipper shells lined the edge of the shore with clumps of dark brown seaweed, frayed and course, like crazy hair. She turned onto her back, looking up at the sky, holding hands with Mack. They were an “us,” she thought. Perhaps this was the happily ever after she was hoping for.
